Thanks to its geographical position and to its long history, being a bridge between Balkans and Mediterranean, Albania owns a precious cultural and biological heritage that needs protection and, at the same time, represents a lever of sustainable socio-economic development.
However, the management of the Protected Areas in the Country is not optimal: population and stakeholders are not aware of the essential role they could cover in protecting and capitalizing local resources and even the recent law reform in the field suffers a lack of technical competences and financial resources.
In this framework, “ACAP, Azione Comunitaria per la preservazione delle Aree Protette in Albania” – financed by AICS – comes to life: for the correct protection and exploitation of local heritage potential, this initiative aims at designing inclusive and efficient management strategies, involving the main actors actually coordinating Protected Areas in the Country (NAPA and RAPA) together with local communities, municipalities and producers.
To reduce the environmental impact related to human activity, we will focus on thematic training for park rangers and on raising awareness and engagement of local communities and companies through a partial conversion to the green economy.
During ACAP project implementation, Kallipolis will enhance governance capacities of 4 Albanian protected areas (Llogara, Vjosa-Narta, Tomorri Mount, Bredhi i Hotovës-Dangëlli) through the strengthening of Management Committees and bringing CSOs and local communities into the processes of decision-making.
