GHAZZE IN PROGRESS

Enhancing Environmental and Urban Conditions in Bekaa Valley

UNHCR estimates Lebanon is hosting 1.5 million of Syrian refugees, making it the country with the highest number of refugees compared to its population. The social integration between hosting community and refugees is limited. Lebanese cities are therefore vulnerable and in need of medium and long term interventions to sustain both refugees and Lebanese people in everyday life.

The project “Ghazze in progress” aims at the enhancement of the environmental conditions of Municipality of Ghazze, focuses on water supply system and solid waste management and the regeneration of a small urban park in the center of Ghazze.
The interventions of upgrading will be provided by the local community engagement and the involvement of relevant stakeholders and local Authorities.

This project is supported by Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Kallipolis will work with the Municipality of Ghazze, with the support of Oxfam and AFDC as local partners, for the implementation of two actions of environmental urban upgrading.
The first intervention concerns the enhancement of a green public space owned by Ghazze Municipality, used by Lebanese population and Syrian refugees. The second action aims at water and sanitation upgrading of a neighborhood in the suburbs of Ghazze, through a new sewage to connect the households with the urban waste water system. Around 100 families have been living the neighborhood, half of them are Syrian refugees.
